Velda Crawford-Woods
From East Village Community School
Bio by Collin Rhyins, 5th grade
Velda Crawford-Woods is a Pre-K teacher at EVCS. She was born and raised in Queens, NY. Velda’s childhood ambition was to be a physical therapist for football players. Some of her hobbies and what she does when she’s not at school are playing cards, eating, playing board games, bowling, watching sports, and thinking. Velda went to college at Kingsborough for two and a half years and studied Physical Therapy. She then went to the University of Buffalo and studied early child education. She went to get her masters degree in elementary education from Hofstra University. Before coming to EVCS, she was studying at college and working in a childcare center.
What made Velda want to work at EVCS was a college professor who told her about an amazing school that was just starting. Velda believes that people learn by doing and talking, not by just listening. The hardest thing about her job is keeping things organized in a small space. Velda loves the children at EVCS and everything about them. When Velda wakes up on the weekends, does she wish she could go to work/school? “Never!” Velda replied. Velda wishes for her students in the future that they can learn anything, look at the world carefully, and change things if they need to.
