Jessica Helms
From East Village Community School
Bio by Noel Feliciano, 5th grade
Jessica Helms is an IEP coordinator and teacher at EVCS. Jessica’s childhood ambition was to be a singer in a rock and roll band. Jessica’s hobbies are singing, playing cards, going out to eat and going out to concerts. Jessica grew up in Philipsburg, New Jersey and was born in Plainfield, NJ. She now lives in Queens. When Jessica wakes up on weekends, she doesn’t want to go to school/work because she wants to relax and be with her friends and family. Jessica went to NYU for four years for Elementary Education and Bank Street College for three years for Special Education. Before Jessica came to EVCS, she worked at a daycare in the Time and Life building.
Jessica wanted to work at EVCS because it is a community where many different people come to learn and teach. The hardest thing about Jessica’s job is having enough time to do things she needs and wants to do. When asked, “What do you believe about how you teach kids, how they learn, and education?” Jessica answered, “Kids need to do real things that they are interested in. Teachers have to think carefully about each kid’s needs, kids learn by being together.” She loves the kids at EVCS because they have a lot of energy and they’re creative and they are all different. Jessica’s hope for her students in the future is happiness for all of them.
